Control Animated Gifs in PowerPoint

I don't know why people like ani gifs in PowerPoint (or anywhere!). They almost always look awful. BUT they do... and what's more they want them to start animating when you click them and stop when you click again.

Sounds like you could do this in custom animation but you can't! There's no way to add a start animating this way.

You Can Fake it Though!

First insert the animated gif

Copy and paste special as a gif. This will give you a non animated copy.

Make a non animated copy

Next give the real gif an appear animation triggered by the gif copy (Picture 2) and the copy an appear triggered by the real gif (Picture 1). If you don't understand triggers see here

Add triggered animation

Finally add disappear animations for the real gif and for the copy. Make these "With Previous" and drag these animation below the triggers as shown below. Superimpose the two images.
