PowerPoint pps Files Open in Edit Mode!

Warning this tutorial is NOT for beginners!

.pps files should open directly as a show when double clicked but sometimes they open in edit mode. How can you fix this?

First

Right Click a pps file and look at the pop up menu. The default action should be SHOW and this should be in BOLD. If the default action is something else (NEW?) then this is the problem. Sadly if you have Windows 7 this is not simple to fix! Sometimes repairing your PowerPoint Program will reset the default. Try this first!

Right Click menu

Method 1 - 'I am Happy Playing With the Registry!'

If you are NOT happy with changing the registry and don't know how to create a backup use method 2!

Create a back up and navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\PowerPoint.SlideShow.8\shell\Default

If the value is Edit change it to Open.

See if pps files now open in show mode.

Method 2 - I Don't Understand Registry Keys!

First download the free program DEFAULT PROGRAMS EDITOR. Unzip it and place the 'Default programs Editor.exe file on the Desktop (or somewhere easy to find).

The video shows how to use it!
